There are 90 natural types of atoms, and about 25 more that scientists have made in labs.  An atom is the tiniest particle of matter possible and is known in Greek as "Atomos" or “indivisible”.  The reason it is called “indivisible” is because it is, literally indivisible.  there are three parts of an atom, a proton, neutron, and electron.  If you could somehow make an atom smaller, it wouldn't have the same characteristics as the substance that it makes up.   there are more than 25 million atoms in a dot made from a pencil.  There are about forty quinvigintillion (4 followed by 79 zeroes) atoms in the universe (although this leaves out many factors that could add to that).  Also, one atom is about one angstrom (1 billionth of a meter) long!
